Running for Beginners: Here’s What to Do

17/03/2021 by Adam

You’re likely reading this blog post today because you’re keen to take up running as part of your exercise regime. There’s no denying that running is a brilliant way to boost your stamina and health, improve your weight, and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

The problem is, some people new to running end up doing too much in a short space of time and a few people even injure themselves, as a result! With those thoughts in mind, here’s what you should do to prepare for running:

Invest in the Right Footwear

Firstly, it makes sense to devote some time and money to get the best running shoes that meet your needs. As you can appreciate, there are many different examples on the market, each tailored to specific requirements.

Everyone has different footwear needs, so you should carefully consider yours before buying a pair of running shoes. It could also make sense to consider a pair of custom orthotics insoles if your feet require extra support while you’re out running.

When you research footwear, be sure to shortlist only ones that offer the best durability, flexibility, and support for your budget. Don’t always assume that the most expensive pair of running shoes are the best!

Wear the Right Clothes for the Occasion

You want to make sure you’re as agile and comfortable as possible when you go out running. To that end, dress appropriately for the occasion. As with running shoes, you’ve got plenty of clothing choices at your disposal.

If you’re a woman, you should also consider wearing a sports bra as they’re sturdier than regular bras, and they provide additional support. When choosing clothes to buy for running, consider focusing on retailers that sell mainly sports clothing for the best choices.

Plan Your Runs

You must always have a plan in mind of where you’re going running, the duration, and the distance you wish to run. Doing so offers several advantages, like giving you an insight into your fitness progress and motivating you to stick to your running.

You should also plan your runs, so loved ones know where you’re going for safety reasons. That way, if something were to happen to you during your run, your loved ones would know where to go looking for you in an emergency!

Always Start With a Warm-Up

The golden rule of running that you should never break is avoiding a warm-up session before going for a run. Warm-ups of five minutes or more get your body used to physical exercise and help to increase blood flow to your muscles.

Your warm-up routine can include power walking, knee lifts, or even climbing some stairs. Whatever you do, ensure that it gently introduces your body to exercise before you start running for several miles.

Conclusion

Running is a simple and easy pastime to take up if you plan to boost your exercise regime. If you follow the above tips and advice, you can make sure that you’ll have enjoyable, safe, and injury-free runs. Good luck!
