Exercise of the Day! – Sit-Ups

09/08/2014 by Adam

Sit-Ups (Preperation)

So far I’ve mostly focused on tasty and nutritious recipes that virtually anyone can make in their kitchen however I thought it was about time I started posting around the fitness-side of my blog (considering half the name is about fitness!). I thought I’d start with some basic exercises that anyone can attempt within their homes without needing to join a gym.

These exercises are called ‘Sit-Ups’ and, as you’ll probably know already, focuses on the Abdominal region (or the abs) as well as working your External obliques. All you need is a flat surface and maybe some kind of gym or yoga mat.

You should lie on your back with your knees bent and ensure your feet are flat on the ground. Your arms should be by your side in a natural position.

Inhale and raise your torso by rounding your back and breathe out as you lift and complete the movement. Your arms should come up and over your knees to reach out as far forward as possible, then return to the first position.

Repeat this movement until it starts to hurt (then do 3 more!).

Variations
You can also do this with a partner by getting them to hold your feet whilst you come up, this is probably better for beginners who need to strengthen their core muscles further.

As a guide, try doing 3 sets of 10 at a steady pace as the slower the pace the more control you have over your abs (although it makes things harder!).

If you find this exercise relatively easy, place your hands by your head so that your fingers are touching your neck. This way you’ll only be using your abs to reach the final position making things harder!

See how many you can do and let me know how you get on!
