Looking Out for the Health of Your Loved Ones

08/05/2018 by Adam

Throughout life, you will experience many changes to your own health, whether that’s gaining a few pounds or feeling fatigued. Most likely you’ll know how to combat these issues when they affect you, but when it comes to your loved ones, it’s your responsibility to watch out for symptoms and signs which may alert you to that fact that something just isn’t right. This is especially true if you have older relatives in your family, who could be showing signs of ageing and that you need to be there for them more than usual. It can be a tricky time for everyone in the family, especially if you have a full-time job and you have kids to care for, but the health of everyone in the family is always a priority. To help you look after your loved ones with ease, make sure you follow some important tips.

Help with weekly shops

Having a nutritious diet becomes more essential as people age, but it can also be a more difficult part of your life to consider when food is sometimes hard to prepare. The trick to ensuring your loved one is getting all the vitamins they need is to go with them on their weekly shop or buy them their food when you are on yours. When you are doing this, you should look for foods that are easy to prepare, such as pre-made meals that you can pop in the freezer for ease.

Encourage exercise

When you age, you will start to notice signs that your body is not what it used to be, but you can help keep bones and muscles strong by doing regular exercise. To decrease the risk of falls, you should be suggesting new ways to exercise which will bring your loved one the same health benefits at a lower risk. The best examples include short walks, light yoga in the home, or any activity your loved one may enjoy doing such as gardening. To minimise any problems, you can offer to exercise with them when you are free.

Offer medical assistance

There will be times when you can’t be with your loved one, or that you live far away. Where you can, order food to be delivered to their door or visit for daily check-ups, but it is often best to hire a medical assistant from a trusted company such as FreedomCare. With someone like this always on hand, you can be assured that your loved one is being taken care of fully and with respect. They can help with important moments like ensuring they take any medication, to taking them to any doctor’s appointments, and will also serve as a friendly face if they are starting to become lonely.

Look for signs of ill mental health

Loneliness is something that affects much of the older generations and has become such a problem that it is now treated as a mental health condition. If someone is spending much time on their own, it is likely that they can start to feel depressed, or anxious about going outside. Having a caregiver on hand can help, but to tackle the root cause, you can start by spending as much time with them as you can, and looking out for any signs they aren’t feeling themselves. These signs include fatigue, irritability and loss of interest in usual passions.
