If you are interested in getting a bit more exercise into your lifestyle, you might find yourself looking into running as a potential solution. There are so many reasons why running is a great choice. Have questions about getting started? You will find all of the relevant answers and advice below.

Why should I start running?

There are a host of wonderful benefits associated with choosing running as your go-to form of exercise. For example, running:

  • Is low maintenance In other words, you can do it pretty much anywhere, at any time, and with minimal equipment. All that you will really need is your trusty pair of running shoes and a good dose of enthusiasm.
  • can help you to lose weight. It is a form of cardiovascular and aerobic exercise which aids in burning calories and fat.
  • can boost your stamina and strength. Running encourages you to push yourself and works a variety of a different muscle groups.
  • can help to look after your mental health. This is especially true if you do your running outdoors in the fresh air and sunshine.
  • is known to improve sleep and maximize energy.
  • has the potential to save you money. No more hefty gym fees to pay when you can simply head outdoors or invest in a treadmill of your own.

How can I get started?

As already mentioned, all you will really need is to buy yourself a pair of sturdy, supportive running shoes. From there, unless you are already quite fit, be sure to start out slow. Most experts suggest starting off with a brisk walk just a few times a week, gradually increasing your pace and how often you head out for a run. Remember to listen to your body — dial it back down immediately if ever you feel any pain or intense discomfort.

How do I find the best running shoes?

Firstly, be prepared to pay. Your shoes act as the foundation of your running journey, so they are definitely not an item on which you want to skimp. Also, be sure to educate yourself in terms of the various technologies available in different brands and types of running shoes as they can be notably specific. There are shoes for trail running, road running, treadmill running, runners who race, etc. Most importantly, choose your running shoes based on the type of terrain on which you tend to run the most.

Next, ensure a snug fit and investigate whether you require a special design for overpronation, which is when your ankles roll inwards with each step. Stability running shoes can correct this error and help to reduce the risk of injury.

The shoes that you wear have a significant influence on your personal injury risk and can prevent runner’s knee, shin splints, etc. The act of running with shin splints can be painful and dangerous, so you will want to do everything in your power to avoid them!

How can I prevent running injuries?

Go back to the answer above and ensure that you have the right running shoes working in your favor.

It is also vital that you stretch before and after every running session, that you build up your workouts slowly and gradually, and listen to your body. Don’t over-do it and never skip your rest days. Rest days are important even for experienced runners as they allow your body to recover and strengthen.

Now get out there and run like the wind!
