Interview With Cake Believe

18/08/2015 by Adam

Clare and Kate from Cake Believe

For some time now it has been my intention to add a new element to the blog and include interviewing those that are inspired and working extremely hard within the Food and Fitness industries.

This is the very first interview with a Baking business called ‘Cake Believe’. I first stumbled upon them after my girlfriend was presented with four delicious birthday cupcakes, and after being offered the one, it took all my willpower not to go for a second and third!

Cake Believe are based on the Wirral, which isn’t far from Liverpool and in the North West of England. It was set up by two close friends, Clare and Kate, who have a real passion for Baking. This is what they had to say…

What is Cake Believe?

We are a home-based baking and cake decorating business. All of our cakes are baked fresh in our kitchen and we have a specially designed cake studio where the decorating happens!

How did you get started?

We have known each other for over 14 years and we both have a love of baking. We attended some professional bakery courses in delhi when we were younger and it all started then! Once we returned from the course, we both decided to make cakes for family and friends and over time we started helping each other out. We realized that with our shared skills and knowledge our work improved and we haven’t looked back since. After positive feedback about our cakes we decided to go for it and set up as a business, as by then it had become more than just a hobby for us both.

How did you come up with the name?

It took us a while to decide on the name. We wanted something fun and memorable. We went back and forth between a few but with the help of friends and family we decided on Cake Believe which we love!

When did you realise your love of baking?

Kate: In 2010 I was going to Malawi in Africa to do charity work and to fundraise I did quite a few cake sales. It was then that I realised how much of a passion I had for baking.

Clare: I have always loved baking since I was very young and would make cakes at home. As I’ve grown up I have always enjoyed trying out new ideas and recipes.

What do you want to achieve over the next year?

Over the next year we are planning to enter our first competition cake at Cake International. In October we will be attending our first wedding fair to showcase our work and this is something we plan to make more regular over the next year. Other than that we just want to continue to improve and learn new techniques and ways to make our cakes even better.

Is there one particular product you are most proud of?

Clare: It is hard to choose just one cake because every time we complete a new project that we haven’t done before I am proud of the end result. I feel proud whenever we see our customer’s reaction when they see their cake for the first time.

Kate: I agree, it is really great being able to make people smile with something we have created. It makes all the time and effort we put into a cake really worthwhile. The cake I am most proud of changes whenever we do something different. I love how our Harry Potter book cake turned out and how popular it was with everyone, but if you ask me next week it will probably be something new!

What advice would you give to someone that is new to baking?

The biggest piece of advice we could give to someone who is just starting out in baking and cake decorating is to practise as much as you can. Always start a project with a plan in mind. You can always change things along the way but if you have an idea of what you are working towards, the final result will be better. Don’t be afraid to take on a cake that you think might be challenging. This is one of the best ways to gain experience and improve your skills.

Where does your inspiration come from?

Everywhere! We are always discussing how certain ideas can be translated into cake. As we are both self-taught, social media plays a massive role, inspiring us with new techniques and design ideas. Inspiration also comes from our customers who come to us with an idea that we then take and develop into the cake they are looking for.

Toy Story Cake Believe

Which famous bakers do you look up to and why?

There are so many talented people whose work we look up to in this field but we both agree that the work of sugar crafter Carlos Lischetti is truly amazing and it motivates us to perfect and improve our own work.

We also love cake designer Lindy Smith. Her original cake designs are really unique and inspire us to be more creative too.
