Don’t Lose Your Way Towards Your Fitness Goals

17/06/2020 by Adam

Setting goals for yourself when it comes to your exercise and fitness is one of the most important aspects when it comes to finding the motivation to keep it up. Those goals can help you make meaningful improvements, rather than simply working towards general health without any real objective in mind. However, it’s also important to bear in mind how you reach those goals. Here are a few tips to make sure you don’t lose your way.

Make sure to match your workouts to your goals

This might sound like an obvious tip, but there are plenty of people who waste more energy than they need to by taking on exercises that are suited to their goals. It’s wise to have a balance of cardio, strength training, and flexibility exercises, and to work on each muscle group. However, you should find the balance that leans towards your goals, with specific workout programs designed to help you target certain things.

Keep yourself accountable

When you’re working towards a goal, how do you know how much progress you’re making? By tracking it on paper of course (or digitally if that works better for you.) For instance, if you’re working on benching a certain amount, you have to record how much you bench, just as you should record your distances if you’re aiming towards a 1km run. However, you also need to keep a note of how often and when you train. Seeing big gaps in your schedule that don’t have a good justification can give you the push you need to correct your efforts. Accountability is a powerful force, indeed.

Are you fueling yourself towards your goal?

You’ve probably heard that, when it comes to weight loss, the effort is going to be 90% diet, 10% exercise. While the numbers might not exactly be the same for all exercise goals, the general spirit of the tip is. You need to make sure that you’re giving the body it needs to meet those goals. For instance, if you’re engaged with some strength training goals, you’re going to maximize your gains with the right muscle building supplements as well as a protein-rich diet with managed carbs. Whatever your goal, ensure you’re giving yourself the right fuel to reach it.

Give yourself the recovery time you need

When you’re aiming hard at a specific goal, it’s very easy to motivate yourself into overworking. However, if the word “over” isn’t enough of an indication, let’s state it clearly: it’s not good for you. Listen to your body, be aware of the risk of injury that comes with every exercise, and take the time to cool down and recover from each exercise. Take break days when you push yourself hard, and if you find yourself dealing with any pain beyond the expected burn, stop the exercise immediately and take a break.

If you do lose motivation and willpower towards one of your goals, it’s worth reconsidering whether it’s really what you want to aim for. If you’ve reached one goal, sometimes it’s good to shift focus so you can add a bit of variety to your routine, too.
