Why Should You Be A Healthcare Administrator?

01/02/2019 by Adam

It can be hard to decide on a career. Whether you are just starting out in your working life, or you have been working for a number of years but feel as though you need a change, working out what to do should never be a quick decision. You need to think carefully about what you will enjoy doing, but also about what your skills would suit well in terms of a career.

For some, a career in healthcare administration can be hugely fulfilling and interesting, offering much scope for advancement and a great sense of job satisfaction. Here are some of the reasons why you might choose this career.

So Many Opportunities

By 2020, there will be thousands more healthcare administration jobs available, meaning that if you start your MHA (Masters in Healthcare Administration) soon, you will be able to take advantage of this and choose exactly the job you want in the place you want to work. Although hospitals employ roughly one-third of all healthcare administrators, that doesn’t mean that’s where you’ll have to work once you have your degree if you don’t want to. Other opportunities include:

  • Clinics
  • Outpatient clinics
  • Rehab centers
  • Nursing homes
  • Group practices
  • Mental health facilities

This means that you will be able to find the ideal workplace to suit your temperament, whether that’s a busy, bustling hospital, or a quieter nursing home.

Job Security

As the world changes and the working practices of many change with it, careers that offer great job security are more important than ever. Healthcare administration is one such career.

People are living longer, but that also means that they need a variety of different healthcare providers to assist them to live comfortably. Administrators will always be needed to ensure that clinics, hospitals, nursing homes, and other medical facilities run smoothly, especially as more and more patients come through the doors.

You Can Make A Difference

When you think of the medical profession and how a patient’s life can be improved, you might immediately think of doctors and nurses. It’s true that these experts will be able to make huge differences, perhaps even life-saving ones, but that doesn’t mean that the talents and skills of the healthcare administrators don’t make a difference too. You might not be on the front line, but without a highly skilled administrator behind the scenes, the work that the doctors and nurses do might not be able to happen, or at least not happenas efficiently as it does when there is a great manager at the helm.

A Good Salary

Although money is not the be all and end all,and isn’t always what prompts someone to choose a particular career, the fact that a healthcare administrator is paid a good salary certainly does make the job even better. The average salary for a healthcare administrator is around $65,000, although pay is always going to depend on where you are working, your qualifications, and what experience you have in the past. Some healthcare administrators earn a six-figure salary, and this is always something to bear in mind when thinking of career progression.
