Surprising Motivation Techniques That Can Help You Get Fitter

14/11/2016 by Adam

We all have fitness goals – but only a few people have the motivation and determination to succeed. However, if you are struggling with motivation, it’s not something to worry about – it’s something to combat. Anyone can become more motivated, and there are a few surprising techniques that you can develop which will help.

In today’s guide, we’re going to run through some simple motivational tactics that can help you achieve your ultimate goals.

Talk to yourself in the second person

When you speak to yourself during fitness workouts, make sure you do so in the second person. “You can do this’ is a lot stronger for your motivation than ‘I can do this’. In essence, you are commanding yourself to drive on, just as you would if there was a personal trainer right there beside you. And it does work. According to the European Journal of Psychology, when the chips are down, the word ‘you’ will help you perform better than the word ‘I’.

Look the part

There are two factors at play here – your posture and your clothing. If you can go to the gym with your head held high, you will work out longer – and harder. Again, researchers have found this to be true – a power pose can increase testosterone. It’s the same principle for your workout gear, too. Look around for a Reebok or Gymshark sale in your area and pick up some fly workout clothing. Find something that feels comfortable and looks great. Your motivation will increase by a  significant amount.

Make fitness your business

Your diary is probably full of work meetings and events, right? Well, why not see fitness as part of your schedule, too? Putting your regular fitness slot into your diary will put it in the same importance as your next work meeting. And with that added prominence, it soon becomes part of your life. It’s easier to plan around a workout than it is to find the time from somewhere. And, you will be a lot more motivated to stick with your plan from Day One when you see it every day in your diary.

Devise the perfect playlist

Workouts can be tough on your body – and your mind. However, if you give yourself the perfect setting for success, things will be far easier. Create a playlist for your workouts that include all your favorite songs or tunes. When you have that music seeping through your ears, your mind gets taken somewhere else. I will help you get through the mental pain barriers that are a major pitfall and will tempt you to quit.

Create the perfect mental picture

When you start getting fit, there isn’t much in the way of progression. It seems like a lot of work, for not much in the way of results. To avoid that disheartening feeling, picture yourself as you want to look in 6 months time. Know that if you follow your plan, you will achieve those results, no matter how far off they feel right now. And always keep that mental picture in your head, even through the toughest times.

Good luck – and let us know how you get on!
