Support on Your Weight Loss Journey: The Missing Part of the Puzzle

24/10/2016 by Adam

When people talk about losing weight, they often make it sound simple. They express it as an easy formula of eating less and exercising more. On a basic, physiological level, that may be all it is. However, losing weight also requires you to engage your mind. For many people, there are deeper psychological reasons behind their weight. People use food to make them feel better and may even have a food addiction. For others, it might be difficult for them to eat healthily or even exercise regularly. If you want to lose weight, it can be a huge struggle to do it alone. You need support from the right people, as well as the best techniques to help you achieve your goals.

See Your Doctor

If you want to lose weight, seeing a doctor is a good idea. There are a few reasons for this, including getting a health check. If you’re about to change your diet or start exercising more, it’s a good idea to see what your body can handle. Perhaps you need to take it easy to avoid putting too much pressure on your heart. You may also be able to look for an underlying reason for your weight. Maybe you have tried to lose weight before and couldn’t seem to shift it.

Another good reason to see your doctor is to receive the advice and support you need. If you see your GP, they can start by recommending how you can eat and exercise in a healthier way. They can also make recommendations for receiving the psychological support you need. It might help you to see specialists too, such as a nutritionist or a therapist. They can give you even better advice using their training and experience. Using their expert advice, you can create a plan you can stick to and work on your issues.

Address the Issues Behind Your Weight

As previously mentioned, it’s important to look at why you are overweight. Sometimes it may be a medical issue. However, it’s often a psychological issue preventing you from controlling your weight. You might have lost weight in the past but put it back on quickly. Perhaps you try to get a handle on your weight, but your efforts always stop when you have a bad day or a few bad days. People can rely on food to make them feel better when they’re upset. Or they might develop an unhealthy relationship with food or their weight as a child.

It’s important to recognize that these issues can get in the way of losing weight. You might be able to lose weight successfully, but it could only be for a short period. Unless you address the issues that made you overweight in the first place, you may struggle to maintain a healthy diet and weight. You need to talk to someone about why you over-eat or find it difficult to engage in exercise. Some people might attempt to work through these thoughts and feelings on their own. However, having a therapist to talk to can give you an outside perspective. They can help you think about things you might not have considered on your own.

Join a Support Group

The concept of losing weight with others is certainly not a new one. Many people decide to join a support group to help them lose weight. There are some great benefits to doing so that will help you achieve your goals. Firstly, you will have others to talk to and share your weight loss journey with. You can swap healthy recipes, talk about the difficulties you have, and cheer each other on. Having a weekly meeting helps you to set goals and keep track of your progress. Another helpful thing is that when you join a group, you often have a program to follow. This might mean that you subscribe to a diet, which can be helpful to teach you to eat more healthily. It can be easier to follow rules you’re than to make up your own, which allows you to move the goalposts.

Medicating for Weight Loss

Can you use CBD For Quick Weight Loss? Do weight pills actually work? How do you know which ones are approved for medical use? Changing your diet and exercise routine are the first methods anyone should use to lose weight. However, some people need extra support, not just psychologically but physically too. One of the options for these people is to consider medication. Many people look at diet pills and supplements to help them lose weight. However, very few products are approved by doctors for weight loss. One of the options a doctor might recommend is orlistat tablets, which have a proven benefit. They work by reducing the amount of fat your body absorbs. This can help you in your weight loss, although you still need a healthy diet and plenty of exercise.

Consider Surgical Options

Some people need to lose a significant amount of weight. Being obese can put pressure on their body and losing weight without help can be difficult. For some of these people, weight loss surgery is sometimes a recommended route to take. There are several different types of surgery. But they all essentially help someone to eat less. This can sometimes be vital if someone is dangerously overweight. However, weight loss surgery should be combined with other methods. If you don’t address the issues behind your weight, the surgery can only help you so much. Some people have lost weight after surgery but then managed to gain it again, despite having a gastric band or something similar.

Find a Sponsor or Coach

People who are overcoming addictions often have a sponsor or mentor who can help them. They have usually experienced the same thing and can offer advice from their own journey. Many people who want to lose weight are also addressing an addiction to food. Even those who aren’t can benefit from having someone to coach them on their weight loss journey. It’s a good idea to find someone who can guide you. They might be a personal trainer or a lifestyle coach. They could also be a best friend, a doctor, or someone from your weight loss support group.

Resisting Negativity

One of the most difficult things when you’re trying to lose weight is the negativity of others. Unfortunately, it can often come from others who are overweight. They may not want to see you achieve your goals as it makes them feel bad about being unable to achieve theirs. However, you could experience negativity from anyone and at any time, from the office to the gym. It can be extremely demotivating and might make you question yourself. For example, you might experience comments about your healthy lunches at the office or feel judgmental looks at the gym. Learning how to respond to this negativity is essential. Sometimes, ignoring the behavior is best. However, you might need some stock phrases to get people to stop bothering you.

Finding New Coping Methods

If you use eating as a coping method, changing that needs to be part of your weight loss journey. However, it isn’t an easy thing to do and can take a long time. For some people, exercising can help them deal with things, which helps them to stay healthy. But there are many other things you can do that aren’t related to eating. You might keep a diary or start meditating. If you’re not sure what to do, explore your options and try out new things.

If you want to lose weight and keep it off, you need the right support and motivation. Make sure you aren’t going it alone if you want to be successful.
