[REVIEW] MyProtein – Protein Bars Review

02/11/2019 by Adam

Ever since I first started my fitness blog I’ve been asked to review countless protein-related snacks, bars, drinks and so on! Yet when MyProtein approached me and asked if I’d try out some of their protein bars I didn’t hesitate to say yes. Why was that? Let me tell you…

Well firstly because I’d never worked with MyProtein before. Being a little in the industry myself I’d clearly heard of them, they’re one of the biggest nutrition brands out there, and have been for some time now.

So when it came to trying out their protein bars I was very interested. My main question to myself was ‘how are these going to be different?’ and ‘what’s going to get me so excited about them compared to what I was used to?’

Well when the bars I’d be receiving were first described to me I was certainly intrigued when flavours such as ‘Birthday Cake’ and ‘Cookies & Cream’ were mentioned! I mean how can you put the essence of birthday cake into a protein bar? I was already impressed that the designers were thinking outside the box and couldn’t wait to give them a go.

The bars I was sampling are from MyProtein’s newest product range and are known as ‘6 Layer Protein Bars’ – the idea behind them was to make them somewhat indulgent, with plenty of flavour, whilst not making you feel guilty or undoing the hard work you’d just put into a workout.

Once they arrived I went straight for the ‘Birthday Cake’ bar, and I was not disappointed. I can say with certainty this was the only protein bar I’d ever tasted that had ‘hundreds and thousands’ sprinkled over it! As soon as you bite into it you can clearly see the various layers that make up the bar. Everything about it, from the packaging to the taste, to the design, just screamed out ‘quality’.

The ‘Cookies & Cream’ bars were my personal favourites. They had this beautiful top layer of chocolate dust on top! Because of the six different layers I found myself taking smaller bites, otherwise I was chewing for a while! These bars were stacked so you’re certainly getting your money’s worth!

I found myself taking these bars everywhere! To work, to the gym, in my car in-case I got hungry during traffic! They were so convenient and filling, without making you feel bloated afterwards. 20g of protein in each bar was just the right amount. They fit easily into my work-gym lifestyle due to how good they tasted and because I didn’t feel at all guilty enjoying one each day.

Were there any negatives I hear you ask? Well my first thought whenever I’m really enjoying something so tasty is about the sugar levels in each bar. My nutrition goals have always centred around limiting my sugar intake. I’ve dropped brands in the past because of this.

Yet a measly 2.8g sugar in their ‘Birthday Cake’ bar – I was more than satisfied with that. Yes there are sweeteners, but that’s always been ok with me too. Taste is always a personal preference. I wasn’t as keen on the Lemon Meringue bars, but that’s only because I’m not a huge fan of lemon. I am a huge fan of chocolate and these bars gave me everything I wanted and more!

I’ve tasted many protein bars over the years, many are stodgy and dry, these are nothing but delicious and not only matched my expectations but significantly exceeded them. They really are the perfect go-to snack. Now I just need to get my hands on some more!
