Reasons Why Horror Movies Are Good For Your Health

03/12/2019 by Adam

When we know that a scary scene is coming, and we perceive that sense of fear and the impending threat, our muscles tend to tighten up until the scene ends. Some might even hold their breath.

Watching a scary film always comes with a thrill because we can relate to that kind of exhilarating feeling whenever we witness a fictional threat even though we know that we are particularly safe.

Our levels of adrenaline rise, a sharp awareness sets in, and we suddenly feel more alive. It is comparable to the excitement of riding an amusement ride or bungee jumping in which all your senses intensify, hence getting an immediate boost of energy.

What is the science behind it?

Watching a scary film can briefly relieve the pain, as well as the symptoms of stress. These roller coaster experiences provide us with an instant adrenaline boost, which produces a rise in metabolic rate as an effect.

Whenever we watch a scary movie, we tend to focus on something different and far away from ourselves. As such, this distance enables us to feel a kind of made-up terror as it is were authentic.

It can be beneficial to have a harmless space to face your fears. While you feel afraid, you will also do it from a safe distance, which demands all the advantages of a frightful reaction (like a boost of adrenaline) without any adverse effects (similar to the anxiety involved whenever we encounter an actual threat).

This outcome can help in distracting you from painful happenings and enable you to appreciate a moment of comfort.

Scary Movies are Excellent for Brain Health

The surge of emotions within our body stimulates the release of happy hormones in our brain, such as glutamate, dopamine, and serotonin.

These particular chemicals do not only help in generating a positive mood because they also serve as adrenaline in our system.

Scary Films are Capable of Lifting Sadness

That pump of adrenaline signifies another idea that horror films aregreat for your health. People who are sad go through a drastic drop in their adrenaline levels, and the surges of adrenaline as a result of watching a scary film can help in lifting that loneliness and replace them with happiness.

As a result, our body will push back the feeling of sadness, anxiety, and hopelessness to make room for the happy hormones as well as the feeling of excitement induced by the scary moments.

Horror Flicks Help in Burning Calories and Boosting Your Immune System

Due to the active response of your body, it will burn a lot of energy as you progress through a frightening movie. Moreover, horror films can boost your immune system.

As you receive a series of shocks from the thrilling parts of the film, your brain experiences a rise of glutamate, dopamine, and serotonin levels (happy hormones).

These specific hormones help in improving your immune system and promote a healthy environment for your brain. Plus, this effect also influences the movement of white blood cells in the body because their levels increase swiftly after watching a scary film.

Horror Films Help You to Face Your Fears

Usually, the scenarios in horror flick relate to thoughts and realistic conditions that terrify us in real life, which is similar to the stories in mysteriousheartland.com. The scenes and the subjects are from real-world situations that scare us to the bones.

Since the scenarios, situations, and subjects are so familiar in our real life, those fears help us in strengthening our courage to face our fears in reality effectively.

Although scary films do not positively influence the brain, they can provide a desensitization effect. So, if an individual watches scary movies repeatedly, then that person exposes him or herself to these alarming images and become less reactive to the scary images over time. This effect can lower the levels of fear and anxiety.

Horror Movies Bring Improve Bondings

Horror films are beneficial for your health because of the real-life connections they produce. Well, it is not a scary movie experience if you do not have someone to hug.

Scary films strengthen the bond between family, loved ones, and friends because all of you support one another as you get terrified together.

To Conclude

People who do not feel the sudden excitement after watching a horror film would not experience the mentioned benefits. So, when you have the time, try watching a scary movie with your family or friends, since it provides some health benefits that many do not know.
