Recently we decided to venture out to the type of restaurant that I would class as ‘Quality Fast Food’, because you’re likely to see similar items on the menu at your local fast food place i.e. KFC, but spruced up to a higher standard. This restaurant is known as Patterson’s, and it’s situated behind some of the main streets of the city centre of Liverpool.
These type of places are certainly forming a trend around the city, where people would prefer to pay that little bit more for a higher quality burger or fried chicken, in a place with a better atmosphere. Pattersons is a perfect example of this.
We walked in and were immediately greeted by the waitress. One thing that always seems to confuse me about these type of restaurants is how the paying process works i.e. do we pay upfront or at the very end? Thankfully it was all explained right away.
The decor was really well thought out. It was rather bohemian, with artistic graffiti on the walls and a number of interesting items scattered about. It’s the kind of cool place you’d want to hang out with friends without expecting large crowds and loud noise around you.
The menu was full of choice, from fried chicken, to burgers, nachos, wraps and tacos! It was chicken with a mexican twist. We decided not to order a starter but go for some fried chicken to share, along with a burger each. I ordered the ‘Deep South Chicken Rancher’ and my girlfriend ordered the ‘Breast & Pastrami Deli Burger’, along with the smallest portion of fried chicken.
In terms of the fried chicken, we were promised on the menu a chicken that had been covered in their own homemade brine and well-seasoned with a number of herbs and spices. My expectation was that it would be similar to KFC-standard of really delicious-tasting chicken, however I was sadly disappointed.
It was as though the chicken had not been seasoned and all the thought and effort had gone into making the batter crispy. The only way to salvage some taste was to dip the chicken in the Barbecue sauce from the squeezy bottle.
The burger itself was very nice. I believe the Barbecue sauce within the burger was homemade and tasted more smokey and original than the bottled-version I’d previously used. It was crunchy and the flavours worked well together. My only criticism was that there were 3 hash browns inside, which was excessive and took away the flavour of the chicken, 1 was plenty and once I removed the other two I enjoyed it more.
The Breast & Pastrami Deli burger was really enjoyable for my girlfriend. She said that the cheese really complimented the beef and chicken, and it was a well-balanced and very tasty burger.
Overall, the staff were very friendly, the prices were reasonable and I’d give the food another chance. I know the cocktails looked delicious and it would be hard to turn them down twice! So if you’re in the area I’d recommend paying a visit and seeing what this alternative chicken place can offer you.
