Love Your Body As It Gets Bigger: How To Keep Fit In Pregnancy

Being pregnant is one of life’s most beautiful experiences. But, it’s no secret that it changes your body – even if it’s just for nine months. Whether you’re an active person naturally and you want to stay fit during your pregnancy, or you’re relatively new to exercising but want to look after your body and your baby, it helps to know a few hints and tips on how to stay fit during your pregnancy.

What you decide to do will, of course, suit your fitness levels, lifestyle, and ideas on pregnancy, but these ideas should give you a head start. Just remember to stick to your own rhythm and do what feels right for you and you should have a fit and healthy pregnancy from start to finish.

First Things First

If you’re new to exercise, you’re going to want to take it easy (you can find tips on what to do when you’re first starting out here). But, it also applies if you’re the most active person you know. A pregnant body is so much more different to a non-pregnant body. Your limits will be different, and you will need to be a lot more careful. So, it can help to consult your physician or midwife before you start a pregnancy exercise plan.

Start Slow

It will apply to all levels of fitness, but when you first find out that you’re expecting, start off slow. Your body may already feel different, and you may be suffering from a few side effects, so it helps to find out what you’re comfortable with first. If that’s walking on the treadmill, great – or starting aquaerobics good job! As long as you’re starting slow and finding a pace that works for you, you’re on the right track.

Feel Good

It definitely helps to be able to feel comfortable when you exercise too, not just with the type of exercise you’re doing. It can be an idea to invest in your maternity activewear early. That way, you have it ready for when you need it, and there’s no stressing about what to wear. There’s no use in holding on to your regular workout wear for too long; you’ll only feel uncomfortable when you exercise, which could put you off in the long run.

Move More

If you find that you have to cut back on your usual levels of exercise, or you the workout plan that you’ve started is quite light, then it always helps to move more. Walk as much as you can and don’t sit down for too long, as your body would ache a lot more if you do. The trick to having a healthy pregnancy body is to use it as much as it can, rather than let it get lazy. You might also find it helps you to have a healthy labor too!

Take It Easy

A really great form of exercise to start or continue within pregnancy is yoga. You might find that some of the usual yoga poses and sequences won’t work for you at the moment, but that’s where pregnancy yoga comes in. You can find a class or do it online, to allow your body to stretch out and relax – two things that all pregnant women need.
