To me, this is the foundation of eating healthy because if you make the right decisions when it comes to what foods you choose to bring into your home, you’ll massively increase your chances in terms of weight-loss.
Here’s an activity for you. If you still have a copy of your receipt from your last supermarket shop (large or small) go and get it. What do you see on there? Are there snacks, biscuits, chocolate, pastries, crisps etc? Would you honestly say the majority of that list is healthy or unhealthy?
Either way, don’t be disheartened. My own supermarket receipts once felt about two feet long with items I wouldn’t dream of purchasing today, but we all started somewhere and now it’s time for change.
The first thing I would say is making healthier choices at the supermarket go hand-in-hand with being economical, which is of course a very nice side-effect! You won’t spend as much as you once did. For instance, if you choose to fill your kitchen with fruit over crisps, not only is the fruit healthier, you can in fact buy a great deal more.
Another tip is to always go to the supermarket on a full stomach. If you do this you are much less likely to choose unhealthy items and whim buys, simply because you’ll be thinking with your head and not with your stomach (because we all know how angry the stomach is when it wants something!). Would you rather go to the supermarket where almost everything appeals to you?
Remember, if you choose something at the supermarket, you’re going to want to eat it at a later date because you’ve paid for it, however if you don’t buy it to begin with, you don’t have to make the choice later on.
You should also plan a supermarket shopping list based on what you need over what you want. This is again not only smart when it comes to buying healthier products but will also cost you less as you’ll be more likely to stick to your shopping list. Take a pen with you and tick off as you go. Think about what you would like to see in your cupboards, on the sides, in the fridge etc and then make it happen.
As I’ve said before, removing temptation in your home is a very important step and it all comes down to what you choose to buy at your supermarket and local stores. So start planning in advance what you need for your big shop and make sure you go there on a full stomach! You have to be careful in some of these supermarkets though, my friend told me that he had a slip and fall accident recently at a supermarket and decided to pursue it legally because of a lack of health and safety on their part. My friend said he got some useful insight from Florida slip and fall accident lawyers so consider booking a consultation with them for more information. But I digress.
In the next part I will go into specifics about what to buy and what you should avoid when grocery shopping to help you in your decision-making.

Good idea! I always chuck my receipts, but keeping them and keeping track of what I’ve actually spent my money on would be a clever way to monitor what I should and shouldn’t be buying for next time!

Definitely Mila! The supermarket can be a crazy place and before you know it you’ve bought things you didn’t realise, but by reflecting later on, you can learn what to avoid for next time. It’s all about trial and error 🙂
