A List of Simple Things You Can Do To Be Healthy as a Busy Parent

08/11/2017 by Adam

Being a parent can be stressful, with sleep deprivation, worries, and to top it all, kids throwing tantrums. It can be a hell of a busy life. You need to take care of their welfare, their education, find online tutors for your kids, and find help for their extra-curricular activities. The stress and the worry could take its toll on your mental health, you could slip into depression, and without even realizing you could start despising yourself for shouting at your kid. It is, therefore, more important to take care of yourself and stay healthy, for the sake of your kids only.

Build an exercise regimen

Make it a point to exercise regularly. It refreshes and most of all, it helps you retain the vitality that you would need to manage stress. A regular routine would make it easy for you. Do any exercise that you are comfortable with. You could join your local gym, or you could do some brisk walking if that is what relaxes you. Exercising also helps keep you calm, which is what you require more in these moments of stress.

Sleep well

Sleep is an antidote to many problems. Adequate sleep helps rejuvenate, relax, which in turn enables you to be more creative, and energized to tackle the rest of the day. Proper sleep is nourishing and can help improve your moods, which itself can help reduce anxiety related to parenting.

Eat nourishing food

Food is the fuel that powers our mind and our body. It is therefore imperative that you plan your meals, taking care to have regular meals in appropriate portions. Most of all, avoid food that has a high content of sugar and fatty acids, mainly pre-processed foods. The sugar in the processed foods is poison for your body. Instead, focus on food that nourishes, that is fresh, and to the extent possible, procure organic and local food. Chart out a diet routine that comprises of whole grains, an adequate amount of fruits, and vegetables.

Socialize

Socializing is extremely important. An exchange of views, a hearty conversation is all you need to break free of those tensions. Our busy lives, the grinding routine of our professions have any way lead to reduced interaction. We confine ourselves to our cubicles, life revolves around meetings and deliverables, and we have lost touch with many an old friend. Take time to revive those. It is easy. All it needs is a phone call to catch up on missed conversations. Better still have your friends and relatives come over. Leave all worries behind and enjoy the moment.

Make time for yourself

Humans are indeed social animals, and they need to interact to keep themselves going. But, each one of us is unique, have our eccentricities, our own mind and that self-needs a lot of pampering too. The self is the soul, and it needs the “me time”. The time that you should allocate to do things that you love. Some of us love reading and would like to lay hands on the last novel that you purchased, some of us love cooking and would like to experiment with that Greek dish that you have been thinking of. Do it. There is nothing better than taking that break, maybe just to take that hot bath. It relaxes and helps you compose yourself, calm down, gather your thoughts and plan.

Staying healthy is not a choice, it is necessary. Being a responsible parent, we need to keep ourselves active to be able to plan for our kids, to be able to guide them when they require us the most.
