Is Sweet Potato Good for Weight Loss?

25/07/2020 by Adam

There are no doubts that sweet potatoes are healthy. In fact, they have scientifically been proven helpful in weight loss. This is because they are tasty and rich in nutrients and vitamins that help the body perform its most essential functions.

The winter veggies are naturally packed with Vitamin A, dietary minerals, and plant compounds called phytonutrient, which is great for the body. Somehow, sweet potatoes hit the perfect balance between being such a sugary flesh and succulent.

However, sweet potatoes have been purported for being a flattening veggie due to its high-calorie content-, which is not true. Actually, sweet potatoes are known to be a healthier alternative to normal potatoes. Anyone who has ever enjoyed a bowl of sweet potato fries can attest that these vegetables are truly a gift from the earth.

They are touted as a super nutritious food. Today, they are still a favorite among individuals and athletes who count on the veggie as a natural fuel. Perhaps for some bit of natural sweetness and taste, while satisfying their curb cravings.

Here are the various ways in which sweet potatoes can help lose weight:

High in Fiber

Sweet potatoes come packed with lots of fiber. The fiber helps in weight loss by developing a gel-like mesh in the stomach. This makes you feel fuller for longer, thus helping you to stick to a calorie-restricted diet.

In other words, the dietary fiber occupies much room in your tummy, making you feel content most of the time, therefore keeping you free from overeating, high-calorie intake, and potential weight gain.

The dietary fiber is similarly known to support the stool movement. It also promotes the production of good bacteria in the body. Eating fiber-rich sweet potatoes can aid metabolism and digestion and thus increase weight loss. Besides, sweet potatoes are helpful in weight loss and are also an excellent food for people with diabetes.

Energy-rich Good Carbs

Sweet potatoes come loaded with essential nutrients that can help you stay healthy while losing weight. Even so, carbohydrates are not supposed to be overlooked completely, also when working towards weight loss.

Carbs provide energy for various functions, from walking around, taking stairs, and so on. If your body lacks enough carbs, then you will not have the much-needed energy to keep yourself healthy and active. Three hundred grams of mashed sweet potatoes contain about 58 grams of carbs, out of which 8.25 are complex carbs or rather dietary fiber.

Super Low-Calorie Food

One of the secrets to effective weight loss is to eat low-calorie foods. Thankfully, sweet potatoes constitute a relatively low-calorie content that can make for a healthy snack whenever you’re feeling hungry. That doesn’t necessarily mean that you must fry to enjoy it. Instead, opt to grill or roast it to achieve a healthy weight loss.

Sweet potatoes have lesser calories than normal calories have. Therefore having a medium-sized baked or roasted sweet potato for a snuck may not compromise your weight loss goals.

Low glycaemic Value

Foods containing a high glycemic index can create a spike in your blood sugar levels, which is said to be a significant cause of obesity, diabetes, and other health complications.

Fortunately, sweet potatoes contain a low glycemic index that makes them healthy and ideal for people looking to lose weight and those suffering from diabetes.

They are regarded as a low-glycemic diet that’s not associated with an instant spike in blood sugar levels. Instead, they help maintain weight healthily efficiently. Otherwise, un unstable or varying blood sugar levels can result in conditions such as obesity and diabetes.

Sweet potatoes are associated with reduced appetite. A study printed in the Journal of Medical Food revealed that sweat potatoes feature the ability to shrink fat cells.

Has high water content

Lastly, the high amount of water present in sweet potatoes can effectively help in weight loss, both in the short term and long term. It is super hydrating. With the exception that fat and bone, your body is composed almost largely of water. Thus, it’s no wonder that the body responds constructively when you eat foods with high water amounts.

Dehydration subsides your metabolism, further intensifying weight gain, and other health issues. Consuming sweet potatoes can help rehydrate your cells and increase metabolic activity in your body. It also helps combat the accumulation of fat, flushes out toxins, and balances the natural pH levels.

Like fiber, hydration takes up much room in your stomach, making you feel fuller for quite a long time. That means the more high-water content foods you load-up on, the less the chances of overeating or snacking between fried meals. This will, in turn, help in both your weight loss goals and curb the wait from revamping back on.

How to Apply Sweet Potatoes in Your Daily Diet for Weight Loss

The best way to consume sweet potatoes is to steam, roast, bake, or boil. You can add it in yogurt, salads, or eat as a chaat. However, based on the book Healing Foods, boiling or steaming rather than roasting preserves their slow liberating carbohydrates and essential nutrients.

You can ideally add steamed sweet potatoes and maybe sliced red peppers to spinach or arugula. When working towards healthy seasoning, cut out cheese and high-calorie from the diet.

So, enjoy the benefits of sweet potatoes and lose weight in a healthy and efficient and healthy way. You may want to complement the diet with exercises & fat burners like Resurge & PhenQ to achieve your weight loss goals.

Speaking of side effects, there are no known adverse effects associated with sweet potatoes, but still, eating in moderation is recommended. Too much of anything in terms of diet can be harmful, and the same case applies to sweet potatoes.

The high content of Vitamin A present in sweet potatoes is known to make skin and nails to look like orange-hued. Furthermore, those who have a history of kidneys stones are advised to avoid consuming too much of the vegetables because it contains oxalate, which is known to add to the development of calcium-oxalate kidney stones.  It is always important to consult a nutritionist or a dietician before adding too much sweet potatoes to your diet.
