Every so often in the food and fitness world you come across something a little different, that makes you stop for a moment, turn around and really take notice. That’s exactly what happened to me recently when I was introduced to the world of The Performance Kitchen. A whole new channel of food and fitness-related media.
So what’s it all about?
The Performance Kitchen is a YouTube channel that’s very recently launched. It brings together all types of athletes and sportspersons who come on the show and cook their favourite pre and post-workout dishes. They explain why they love them, why they’re so good for them and then demonstrate how to cook them.
To me that’s pretty exciting. I mean it’s not often you get an athlete who comes onto a channel and does more than an interview, but these guests are not afraid to get stuck in. They understand the importance of nutrition and healthy eating better than most and want you the viewer to share in that knowledge.
Watching the show you get a real intimate feel for who they are without a question mark over what they’re trying to promote, and there’s no pretending either. It’s like they’re in your own kitchen with you!
Often you hear from nutrition experts on designated ‘healthy eating’ shows about why certain foods are beneficial for certain goals, and that’s fine, but it’s quite refreshing when it’s the athletes themselves that can describe exactly how the meals actually make them feel after a major sporting event.
At the start of each episode the show is introduced by either Joe or Zara who will interview each athlete whilst helping them with the food preparation. Each episode lasts between 15 and 20 minutes, and almost every minute you learn something useful.
What’s great about this show is the real insight you get into the true personality of the pro athlete. You learn that they’re not so different from the rest of us, they eat, we eat, they eat healthy, so do we!
It’s not too over-produced either with over-excessive graphics that distract from the real reason you tuned in. It’s about the athletes and the food and this formula is all that’s needed to make the show a real success.
Some of the athletes that have already appeared on the show include:-
- Jonathan Broom-Edwards (Olympic Silver Medalist)
- Rachael Burford (Rugby World Cup Winner)
- Sophie Newnes (Jujitsu World Champion)
- Alex Watson (England AFL Player)
- Isobel Pooley (British Women’s High Jump Record Holder)
It’s already an incredibly impressive lineup and yet the channel is only just starting out. Who knows where it’s going to be in a year or two?
What’s exciting about subscribing is not only the recipes, interviews, nutrition tips and insight into their lives, but also who’s going to be appearing next time because there really is such a wide and diverse range of sports and athletics out there, the list is endless.
So I don’t know who’s going to be appearing next on the show, but what I do know is that I’ve been asked to appear sometime over the Summer!
This is a great opportunity for me and the blog that I started almost 2 years ago to be asked to appear alongside the likes of those athletes I’ve just listed.
It’s a real honour and I hope that whilst I’m at the studios to not only share my own knowledge of cooking and ingredients, but also to learn from the experience of the athletes which I’ll of course bring back and share with you guys!
Right now I don’t know when exactly I’ll be there but as soon as I know I’ll keep you guys fully informed!
So if you haven’t already click here to subscribe to Performance Kitchen and go see for yourselves why I’m so enthusiastic about this exciting new channel.
They also have a Twitter and Facebook page if you’d like to connect with them and share your thoughts.
