How to Make your Steak a Healthy Meal

18/10/2018 by Adam

Steaks can be unhealthy, which will depend on the choice of meat cuts, the way it is cooked, or how much you eat. In the rest of this post, we will list down some of the things to do to make steak a healthy meal. Whether you are having a private dining in Buckhead or an intimate lunch at home, keep in mind these things to have a mouthwatering meal without the guilt!

Choose the Right Cut

One of the first things that you have to do is to be familiar with the different cuts available, including their fat content and nutritional value. Often, the tastiest cuts are the ones with the most fat, so you should avoid them if you are trying to eat a healthy meal.  The leanest cuts that are perfect for the health buffs include sirloin tip side, top round, bottom round, and top sirloin steak. It will also be a good idea to just trim the meat to get rid of the excess fat that surrounds it.

Eat with a Salad

In my favorite steakhouse in Atlanta, American Cut Steakhouse, I always order their market greens salad to go with my steak. I do not order anything from their selection of sides. The salad alone will already be filling. A few slices of fresh ingredients to go along with a lean cut of meat is one of the sure-fire ways to make a healthy meal without compromising the flavor of whatever you are eating.

Choose the Right Cooking Method

There are several methods of cooking a steak. The choice of the latter is important to make sure that the steak will end up being a healthy meal. One of the best ways to cook a steak is through broiling, which is an excellent way to avoid any added fat. Braising, a slow cooking process, can also be excellent, especially if you have tough meat parts.

Marinate the Meat

Marinating the meat is important to provide it with added flavors. This way, the steak will end up being mouthwatering without the need for extra condiments that can be a source of additional fat. To add, marinating the meat is also recommended to be able to make the meat tender, especially if it is derived from a part that is overused. If possible, marinate the steak overnight or at least an hour before it is cooked as desired.

Be Careful on the Dressing

A lot of us tend to rely on different dressings to make the steak more flavorful. However, these dressings can be fatty and will not make the meal healthy. If you will dress the steak, choose a dressing that has a small amount of fat. Or better yet, as noted above, just marinate the meat so that it will already be oozing with flavors even on its own.

Take note of the things that have been mentioned above to enjoy a delicious and healthy steak. Similar to other foods, the best secret is to eat in moderation!
