How to Make Your Mental Health a Priority

30/09/2019 by Adam

Thankfully the world is growing more and more accepting of mental illness and this is leading researchers to discover more about each condition and how to treat it. Most people will encounter difficulties with their mental health at least once during their lifetime which is why it’s important to make it a priority. Without good mental health, your quality of life can be severely reduced. There are numerous books you can use in order to improve your mental health, and here are some ways you can start to make your mental health more of a priority in your life.

Know Your Limits

This might seem pessimistic at first; knowing your limits sounds as if you must painstakingly outline every challenge you face or every hurdle you can’t overcome. This is not the case. Taking the time to reflect on yourself and your limits with regard to your mental wellbeing is important as it sets you up for forgiving yourself or surprising yourself in the future. For example, if you know that one of your limits is that you find it difficult to walk through a crowded room, you can forgive yourself if you are unable to visit a busy café that day, or you might celebrate the fact that you overcame your fear and got your coffee anyway.

Understand Your Brain Chemicals

Despite the fact that humans enjoy separating the mind from the body and hold consciousness on a pedestal, your mind is simply a collection of chemicals. Low moods and mental illnesses are a combination of brain chemicals that produce emotions. While this may not sound like a comfort, it means that you can take back control of your mental health by learning which chemicals help or hinder your brain. This is where diet, exercise, medicine and herbal remedies come into play. You can find out more at healthmonthly.co.uk.

Be Open with Your Loved Ones

Some forms of mental illness cause people to become secluded and distant from the other people in their lives. Even if you are a self-proclaimed introvert, it’s important to share your feelings with people you trust. If you suffer from depression, for example, it might be hard for your friends to understand what you’re going through if you don’t tell them. You might be surprised and find that they can offer more help than you could’ve anticipated. Don’t feel guilty or ashamed about leaning on your friends, family, or mental health professionals – that’s what they’re there for.

Balance Protection and Courage

It can be a tricky task to walk the line between protecting your mental health and pressing forward with life. Not everyone deals with their mental health in the same way. For some, it can be tempting to disregard their feelings and push on without a care, however this can cause more damage than good. In other cases, some people might be over-protective of themselves and never allow new experiences to challenge their worldview. It’s important to acknowledge your emotions healthily while also striving for improvement, no matter how small.
