Guidelines on how to choose the best Phlebotomy school

16/05/2018 by Adam

Graduating with top honors in the medical field is not only a fusion of hard work, perseverance, and dedication but also the support of a credible institution which could also include whether you utilize the test prep guidance from services like medicalhero.co to help you establish a career in this one of a kind industry. With that being said, it is quite unfortunate how people tarmac for years without jobs, just because of the incapability of the institutions they studied in.

Being interested in a medical career does not necessarily mean you are eyeing a top-doctor position somewhere in a high-cost hospital, no. Even as a high school graduate, you can take a short course on phlebotomy as a starting point and take more medical certifications in the future.

Puncturing veins and drawing blood from patients are some of the most straight-forward but critical procedures in the medical world, so you need to ensure you have the right skills to become a professional phlebotomist.

Here are a few eye-opening tips to help you choose the right phlebotomy school for you:

  1. Know what phlebotomy entails

When your career is on the line, you should at least be a little inquisitive to know everything your desired course entails. Don’t be enticed by the sweet sophisticated course names. Knowing what your coursework entails will help you shun any form of deception in shady institutions, and also prepare you psychologically.

Think of phlebotomy as the lowest level of surgery since you are making an incision on human skin. Some of the concepts involved are anatomy, venipuncture, and many safety and legal procedures. Knowing all the topics and procedures to be taught in Phlebotomy will enable you to benchmark what different institutions have to offer, and enable you to get the school that offers the best content.

  1. Reputable and accredited institutions

Being accredited simply means that organizations, health care facilities, and the government recognize the credibility of the courses offered in particular institutions. In your hunt for a good school, this should be one of your top priorities.

To make things easier, use technology as a weapon to short-list the accredited schools. Research and get to know whether the school of your dreams is recognized by the different accrediting agencies. When seeking for job opportunities, you are more likely to get employed if have a certificate in a reputable, accredited phlebotomy program.

  1. Location convenience

The many hours of practice and class training should make you take into consideration the convenience of the location. Being such a strong factor, you should get a school that is not so far from your place of residence; the hassle of getting late for classes due to the distance could all be avoided.

If there is no way to get a school close to you, sign up for online classes, and make sure there is a way to get some hands-on experience in the practical lessons. Other than that, find your school that offers over 40 hours of classroom training and a minimum of 120 hours for practical classes.

  1. Training cost

Many suspicious training facilities have come up in the recent years, with the aim of short-changing innocent, promising students. Be on the lookout for schools that offer phlebotomy courses at almost half the speculated cost, or even promise a shorter time for training. Avoid such flashy schools as they might just mess you up with the false promises.

With all this in mind, take a further step of inquiring from friends and people who may have completed a course in phlebotomy. Settling for a school is not a day’s decision; take your time, hold several meetings with yourself, and trust the facts, not the guts!
