The Media Event
As many of you will be aware, I’ve been asked to help promote this incredibly exciting campaign that involves Barley as a superfood and The Barley Beerstro, created by Jimmy Doherty who has designed a menu based around the wonderfully healthy relationship between barley and beer.
If you’re not 100% sure on what I’m referring to, please go back and read my original post for all the details, believe me, you’ll understand why I’m so excited about barley as a superfood!
The event launched with a panel discussion that involved Jimmy himself, along with nutritionist Fiona Hunter and sommelier Jane Peyton. They discussed the health benefits of barley and the positive relationship it has with beer.
Jimmy discussed how important the super grain was for his farm, as he relies on it for food and bedding for his animals. He went on to talk about how barley has been right under our noses in Britain for thousands of years.
Jane, the sommelier who helped pair the various beers with each part of the menu, then went on to speak about how although people know about hops, it is actually possible to make a beer without hops but not without barley.
Fiona went into a lot of detail about how people think of beer being unhealthy and the image of ‘beer bellies’ and how that’s actually a real misconception. Fiona spoke about how barley is the centrepiece of her new book and the reason why everyone in and out of the nutrition world is so excited about it.
There was then a cooking demonstration by Leith’s Student of the Year Chris Rowley, who created two dishes centred around barley, and then showed everyone how you can actually use barley instead of rice to make a risotto.
The food was then served and each dish and its accompanying beer was introduced by Jane, and as you can see, everyone was in great spirits and really loved the food and the event as a whole!
Here are some more images of the event to check out and in my next post I’ll be showing you how you can re-create some of these healthy and very impressive dishes in your own kitchen! So stay tuned!
Adam
