I’m a writer, I like to joke about my physical prowess but it’s my fingers that probably get the best workout. I work in an office, and while it might seem like a cliché, I take my walks to the water cooler very seriously, without them my posterior and chair would probably become one. I’ve read many articles warning about prolonged sitting, all of them recommend moving around at least a little every twenty minutes. I try, but if I’m in the middle of a thought chances are good my good intentions will fall flat.
I’m not alone. Millions of you share my sedate lifestyle, if you’d like to call choosing Netflix and ice cream at the end of a long stressful day a lifestyle. You see it’s a syndrome, if you don’t move at work – why use what precious little time you have at home to be out at the gym? Well I’ll tell you my reason. Because there’s a full length mirror in our bathroom, and I have to look at myself every night before I sleep and every morning before I head to the office.
In my case, it was my fiancée who pushed me into going to the gym. Lame you say, I know – but committing for more than a week, that was all me, and it wasn’t all for vanity.
If you don’t have a fiancée, spouse, family member, friend pushing you into something, is there another way to find the motivation?
Kicking your own butt into gear can be tricky, there’s usually a lot of start and stop involved in achieving your healthy to-do list ambitions; especially when those ambitions remove your buttocks from the couch. I find it very important to clearly define my goals and desired outcome. Am I going to the gym for vanity? Maybe, but that’s not keeping me on a treadmill for more than four minutes. I’m going to the gym to be healthier, to feel better, to have more energy at work.
Watching Game of Thrones is a solid stress relief, but wait till you see just how relaxed you feel after a good workout. And if it’s those terrifying membership commitments that are holding you back, some companies now offer flexible gym memberships to venues all across the nation.
Walking to my gym was enough exercise for me some days, but with enough drive and motivation; a nagging fiancée, a stern trainer, and the flexibility to try different gyms and work-out programmes – I kept going until the guy in the mirror looked a little buffer, and a little more handsome.

I’ve been trying to decide what I should do to lose some weight. I didn’t know that getting a gym membership could be so beneficial! I’ll make sure I give it a shot, since that would encourage me to work out more. Thanks for sharing!
