Unexpected Fitness: Did You Know These Activities Can Help You Keep Fit?

02/11/2016 by Adam

When it comes to keeping fit, sometimes the best approach is to try out different activities. Things like running and weightlifting obviously help you improve your fitness. But some activities can help you lose weight and reap health benefits without you even realising it. Sometimes it helps to get away from the norm and find unique ways to keep yourself fit and healthy. Here are some activities you may not have known can help you with your fitness goals.

Gardening

Gardening is often seen as a way to de-stress rather than lose weight. But despite that belief, gardening can help you burn 19,000 calories a year!

If you spend five hours a week working on your garden, the fitness benefits can start to add up. Even just a half-hour of weeding your garden can help you burn 150 calories. Autumn is a great time to start exercising in the garden- raking and bagging leaves can burn up to 450 calories an hour! Heavy gardening work like landscaping and digging can be an intense workout, as can lawn mowing. If your lawn mower is looking a bit worse-for-wear, look at these lawn mower tires for sale and get it booked in for a service. You’ll be whizzing around the garden cutting the grass and burning calories in no time. An advantage of this is that not only will your garden be looking in great shape, but you’ll also be looking in great shape too!

Of course, getting out into the sun is also a great way to keep your skin healthy. It’s a good way to improve your home and can also help seniors stay fit post-retirement.

Golfing

Even though golf isn’t the most physically demanding sport, golfers reap a range of health benefits. All that walking can burn calories. It also improves your focus, and taking in some nature can better your health.

It’s a fun hobby with plenty of ways to get involved. You could join your local Golf Club and start playing rounds in your spare time. If you want to get competitive, you could even have a tournament with friends. You might even want custom engraved golf trophies for extra fun and motivation.

Keep active while you play. Sitting around in a buggy all the time won’t keep you fit. Walk to each hole and get physically involved to reap the fitness benefits.

Gaming

Video gaming is often associated with kids being inactive and lazy. But there’s a lot of new gaming technology which has brought about some fun and creative ways to keep fit.

A Wii is a perfect console to help you keep fit. Many people have lost weight by playing Wii Fit. Even games like Wii Sports involve a lot of physical activity thanks to the motion controls. You can also play many Wii games on your PC (via a wii iso download), but obviously this won’t involve the same amount of physical activity.

Xbox owners can benefit from Kinect games. There are many games designed specifically for fitness. You can also find smartphone games for keeping fit. Instead of sitting down with a controller, play some of these to have fun while staying healthy!

Cleaning The House

Cleaning your house is something you can’t avoid. Letting dust and dirt build up in your home can cause health problems, plus it just doesn’t look good. Although cleaning can feel like a chore, you may feel more inclined to do it when you learn it can keep you fit.

The trick is to turn housework into a workout. Put your body into it whenever you mop the floor or iron your clothes. Even simple tasks like hoovering can help you burn some calories. Since it’s helpful for your home as well as your body, you might want to start cleaning more often!
