It starts off with being bored. That’s how it always starts. You’ve finally gotten into the habit of going to the gym every other day, hitting the rowing machine for twenty minutes, then the treadmill, followed by that circuit session with dumbbell squats that really brings on the burn. But then it hits you; the boredom of it all. It is just so tedious, and all you can think of it has much the term workout emphasises the word ‘work’.
This is when you find yourself skipping a session, and then another, and then another, and before you know it you’re looking for any excuse possible not to hit the gym. You even start hoping your boyfriend’s parents will call with a spare ticket to the steam train museum, that’s how low you have sunk. That is how monotonous your exercise routine has become. It’s like listening to the bleep as your shopping gets scanned at the supermarket.
Luckily for you, there is an easy fix, a way to get over your workout laziness and get your gymspiration back on track, and it is called fun. Yup. Fun. Remember it? It’s that warm and fuzzy feeling inside your belly, the one that makes you laugh and smile and jump for joy.
So, without further ado, here are some of the new fitness classes you absolutely have to try if you’re looking to get your mojo back. Try any one of these and you’ll find yourself falling in love with fitness all over again.
Rock Out When You Work Out…
Now before you think we’re doing the cliched thing of telling you to listen to a fiery playlist on Spotify, let it be known we’re not. What we’re suggesting with our catchy little title is the Pound, which is essentially an energetic cardio session where you get to rock out to some of the most lively, energizing and sweat-inducing songs ever created, and you do it all with weighted drumsticks. That’s right. You have a weighted drumstick in each hand and commit to playing the air drums in the most exaggerated way possible. How fun does that sound? The best part of all this, however, is the fitness benefits. The 900 calories shed an hour fitness benefits. But it isn’t just about losing weight. It’s also a great way to tone up your body, improve your endurance and learn a little more about rhythm. Like we said, this is the real way to rock out while you work out.
Drawing With Your Feet…
Okay, so we have kind of dumbed Bokwa fitness down to its absolute most basic, but we have also made it way less daunting to anyone that has walked past a Bokwa class and decided there is no way you have the coordination for that. You see, while this trend may look super-complicated, all they are actually doing is drawing numbers and letters on the floor with their feet in time to the music which, once you get the hang of it, is a lot more simple than you were led to believe.
You’ll even start adding your own bit of flair and personality to things when you get into it, swing your arms and shake your hips and smile from ear to ear. If you’re wondering how on earth this is meant to lift your motivation and leave you feeling accomplished, it is an aerobic fitness that combines hip-hop and South African style dancing to improve your lung capacity, your coordination, your balance and your agility, all while waving ba-bye to over 1100 calories in a single session.
The King Of All Hybrids…
And it is called Piloga. Now, when we first read this word on the pinboard at our local Club Fitness, we kind of hoped it was where you got to lie back on a pillow and do some simple yoga movements. However, it turns out Piloga is a lot more rewarding than that. It is kind of the ideal class to get into if you’re desperate to get toned up but terrified of becoming abnormally muscular.
Yup, you’ve guessed it, Piloga is where the worlds of pilates and yoga collide to bring you all the benefits you could have ever hoped for. It lets you relax after a hard day of your boss looking over your shoulder while also boosting your fitness levels and toning up your muscles. Let’s hear that again: relax, get fit, tone up. What more could anyone need to smile and get motivated?
Take To The Imaginary Waves, Man…
Oh, yeah, we mean that is the most literally Californian way possible because this huge fad has burst onto the scene and blown all dull routines out of the water (excuse the pun).
It is called SurfSet and it is influenced by surfing – the movements, the balance, the intensity and, yeah, the chance to have a bloody good time while trimming your not-so-flattering areas. To talk you through this one a bit more, each class tends to be around 45 minutes and it involves you doing certain manoeuvres atop of a six-foot surfboard, which is precariously balanced on top of three balance balls to give you that, “look at me, I’m surfing a wave” sensation.
If you think this is more of a gimmick than a workout then we dare you to show us an overweight surfer. It’s impossible. Surfing requires fitness, strength and a wide range of movements where no muscle is left isolated meaning that you will work your core, your upper body strength and your agility. Pretty cool, huh, dude?
Feel Just Like A Kid Again…
Can you remember what your preschool P.E. lessons were like? They were the highlight of the week as everyone burst into the sports hall wearing off-white sportswear, hoping to run across the balance beam before beating everyone to the hula hoops. Oh, yeah, the hula hoops. Yet, at some point in your life, you probably forgot these little circles of joy even existed.
Well, they do, and they are totally awesome at getting you fit as well as any HulaFit class will prove in no time at all. In essence, all you do is hula hoop to music. However, it is more than just that. You get to listen to cool music, learn cool tricks and pick up new routines, all of which will let you live your dream of running away with the circus.
The reason it makes our list, though, is because it is also a super-duper way of getting you in shape. We’re talking strength, coordination and flexibility, especially in your legs and core. Here is the best bit, though: it’s incredibly fun. Like childishly fun. You’ll find the only thing that aches more than your legs are your cheeks from all that grinning you’ll have been doing.
Time To Party Like It’s 1999…
Imagine if you could have all the fun and excitement of a night out, but instead of waking up with a rock-solid hangover, you wake up slimmer, fitter and more healthy than ever.
Well, you can totally inject some clubbing vibes into your workout routine with Clubbercise, which is where you get fit in a classic nightclub scene – we’re talking club classics, neon lights and glowsticks. Seriously, what could be more fun than that? You could even put on those Kanye West-style slatted glasses and blow a whistle if you really fancied it.
Whatever your style, the point is this: you will burn over 600 calories in a single session. Here is the real cherry on top, though; it caters to everyone because everyone loves a good old boogie. You could be a fitness freak or an out of shape Dad, there is something for everyone, and a ton of laughs to be had at the same time too.
This really is the one you need to try if you’ve fallen out of favor with the gym. Think about how excited and pumped you get for a night on the town, so imagine how motivated you’ll be by this too.
G’Day Mate, Fancy A Little Hop Around…
This has to be one of the most mental things you’ll ever hear, but Kangaroo Jumps is a fitness trend where you wear special shoes with springs on the bottom and, you’ve guessed it, jump around. The clue was in the title.
Not only is this as fun as it sounds, it is also really good for you, especially if you have sore joints because it puts far less stress and impact on your body. The Kangaroo Shoes sort of just cushion you a bit. In terms of fitness, it is a seriously good cardio workout.
Trust us, you’ll be sweating before the session is over, and smiling too, which is of the utmost importance when it comes to kicking your laziness to the curb. So, have a look around, see if you can find a class in your local vicinity and sign you and a friend up because this is something well worth your Instagram-stories.
